What is my child learning?

Children spend a lot of time in 2nd grade developing an understanding of place value. In second grade, place value means an understanding of the hundreds, tens, and ones place. For example, in the number 235, there is a 2 in the hundreds place, a 3 in the tens place, and a 5 in the ones place. The 2 represents 200 and the 3 represents 30. In order to add and subtract (and eventually multiply and divide) fluently and flexibly, it is important that kids have a strong understanding of what each digit in a number represents. A strong understanding of place value gives children access to a wide variety of arithmetic strategies, rather than just the standard algorithm (stacking 2 numbers on top of each other).
