Skill Spotlight: Money & Coins
Subject: Math
Grade: 2
What is my child learning?
Around the world, people use different kinds of money to buy things. Money comes in both bills and coins. Each coin looks different and has a different worth or value. It is important that students can identify coins, but also can add coin values together to create a larger sum of cents. 2nd grade is the only grade that has a specific math standard focused on students’ understanding of money and coins. Therefore, it is important that students master an understanding of coins and their values before leaving 2nd grade. On the other hand, addition and algebraic thinking are concepts that students will continue to explore throughout elementary school. This activity uses money to focus specifically on building strong fluency in addition and number sense, which is a child’s ability to work flexibly with numbers.
