Skill Spotlight:  Homophones & Spelling

  • Subject: English Language Arts (ELA)

  • Grade: 3

What is my child learning?

By third grade, children have learned the basics of sounding out worlds. Now, their goal is to read more smoothly and with expression, like how we talk. This frees up their brains to focus on more complex parts of the English language.  mostly wrapped up basic phonics instruction, and begin to solidify their fluency. Third graders must learn how to spell a wide range of words, including irregularly-spelled ones, as well as how to use context to understand which words are most appropriate in a sentence.  Homophones are a perfect example of these new challenges.
